Radiohead

Radiohead es un grupo inglés de rock alternativo. El quinteto, formado por un grupo de amigos de colegio en 1985, sacó su primer sencillo, "Creep" (1992), del álbum debut de la banda Pablo Honey (1993), el cual se convirtió en su mayor éxito a nivel mundial, en la época en que el grunge (con bandas como Nirvana y Pearl Jam) y el rock alternativo dominaban las radios y los principales listados de música, y posteriormente se consideró a la banda como one-hit wonders. Sin embargo, la banda logró capturar la atención de miles de fanáticos del Reino Unido con su siguiente álbum, The Bends (1995), ganando admiradores gracias a las densas atmósferas logradas con tres guitarras, y al expresivo estilo de cantar (generalmente en falsetto) de su líder, Thom Yorke. El tercer álbum de estudio de la banda, OK Computer (1997), le brindó a la banda la fama mundial y éxito crítico. El álbum, que hablaba de temas de alienación, ha sido aclamado como uno de los mejores de los años noventa.
Entre las primeras influencias de Radiohead, se encontraban bandas de rock alternativo y post-punk como The Smiths, Pixies, R.E.M., Joy Division y Magazine. Con los álbumes Kid A (2000) y Amnesiac (2001) la música de la banda tomó un rumbo menos convencional, con influencias de música electrónica (tales como Aphex Twin), el jazz, la música experimental, la música avant-garde y la música clásica. Hail to the Thief es editado en 2003. Historia
Formación y primeros años (1985-1991)
Radiohead se formó a mediados de los años ochenta, en la escuela Abingdon (un colegio privado para varones) en Oxford, Inglaterra, a la cual el baterista Phil Selway, el guitarrista Ed O'Brien, el cantante/guitarrista Thom Yorke, el bajista Colin Greenwood y su hermano Jonny acudían. Todos provenían de familias de clase media y empezaron a tocar en el salón de música de la escuela, tomando el nombre del único día de la semana en que podían ensayar: On a Friday (en un viernes). Entre las tempranas influencias de On a Friday se encuentran The Smiths de Morrissey, Joy Division, Magazine, Queen, R.E.M., Roxy Music y Elvis Costello. La banda tocó en su primera fiesta en septiembre de 1986, en un bar de Oxford. Jonny era el miembro más joven de la banda y al principio sólo tocaba la armónica, hasta que pudo persuadir a sus compañeros de tocar la guitarra.
Cuando los cinco miembros de la banda dejaron Oxford para asistir a la universidad, estos suspendieron casi cualquier actividad con el grupo, practicando solamente en días festivos, aunque planeando regresar a la banda. Finalmente, después de cuatro años de inactividad, en los cuales todos los miembros excepto Jonny finalizaron sus carreras, la banda regresó en 1991. On a Friday comenzó a lanzar demos, entre ellos el demo Manic Hedgehog, y volvieron a tocar conciertos. La popularidad de la banda en la región de Oxfordshire creció hasta el punto de aparecer en la portada de Curfew, una revista local de música. Aunque Oxfordshire y la región del valle del Támesis habían tenido una escena de música independiente activa a finales de los años ochenta y comienzos de los noventa, esta se centró en bandas de shoegazing como Ride y Slowdive. On a Friday no era visto como un grupo que encajara en este género, y comentaron que habían perdido rastro de este cuando habían regresado de la universidad.
Trabajos solistas
A finales de los 90, Ed O'Brien compuso algunas partes del "soundtrack" del show televisivo británico Eureka Street. El "soundtrack" fue lanzado en formato CD por la BBC. O’Brien contribuyó tocando la guitarra en varias canciones de Enemy of the Enemy, un álbum de la Asian Dub Foundation en el que también participa Sinéad O'Connor.
En 2003 Jonny Greenwood lanzó Bodysong un "soundtrack" instrumental que compuso para el documental del mismo nombre, dirigido por Simon Pummell. El "soundtrack" incluye diversas sonidos orquestales, la mayoría procesada electrónicamente, abarcando desde cuartetos de cuerdas a pianos y el ondas martenot. Éste fue el primer álbum de un miembro de Radiohead como solista, aunque el hermano de Jonny, Colin, participa tocando el bajo y programando. El ingeniero de Radiohead, Graeme Stewart también colaboró en el proyecto. Greenwood también aparece en el álbum de los Pavement Terror Twilight tocando la armónica y la guitarra en varias canciones. Jonny Greenwood también aparece en el "soundtrack" de la película Harry Potter 3, compartiendo el escenario con el vocalista de la aclamada banda británica "Pulp" Jarvis Cocker con el sencillo "This is The Nigth". Greenwood participa en la banda sonora de la nueva película de Paul Thomas Anderson ‘There Will Be Blood’ y protagonizada por Daniel Day-Lewis.
El primer álbum solista de Thom Yorke, The Eraser, fue lanzado el 10 de julio de 2006 por XL Records (el mismo sello de los White Stripes) en Gran Bretaña y un día después en EE. UU. Inicialmente planeado como un álbum de electrónica instrumental, Yorke intenta “purgar sus tentaciones electrónicas” (Los Inrockuptibles agosto de 2006) con canciones de corte artesanal y alejándose del formato “común” de canciones. Acerca de las sesiones de grabación Yorke dijo: “Me sentía como un niño en el aula cuando el maestro le da la espalda... Sentía esa sensación de placer y de juego. Otra cosa apasionante en la grabación de este disco fue la ausencia de un futuro planificado: no había una carrera proyectada, sino sólo la libertad de hacer”. Yorke también aclara que es injusto hablar del disco como un “trabajo solista”, ya que eso “no suena bien” y que contó con gran ayuda por parte del productor del disco Nigel Godrich. De las canciones de The Eraser solo “Cymbal Rush” y “The Clock” fueron tocadas en vivo por Radiohead.
Portadas y arte de discos
Además de su música, Radiohead se caracteriza por un curioso arte en su discos. El artista gráfico Stanley Donwood es otro colega de la banda, habiendo producido junto con Yorke (quien a menudo aparece bajo el pseudónimo "Tchock", "Tchocky", "Dr. Tchock", o "The White Chocolate Farm" ) todo el arte visual de la banda (excepto los video-clips) desde el EP My Iron Lung. Para Radiohead, Donwood ha creado arte que va desde pinturas al óleo a imágenes creadas por computadora y hasta collages (como los que aparecen en OK Computer). Donwood prefiere trabajar en el mismo lugar en el que la banda está grabando para así encontrar un "equivalente visual" a su sonido. Así el trabajo de Stanley ha influido en la imagen pública de la banda y es responsable de varios de los “logos” o imágenes con los cuales se identifica a Radiohead. Los temas que aparecen en su arte aparecen como un catalizador de los temas que trata Yorke en sus letras; y junto con este ganó un Grammy en 2002 por una edición especial de Amnesiac con forma de libro. La relación entre Yorke y Downwood se arrastra desde los tiempos en que ambos estudiaban arte en la Universidad de Exeter.
